“Philipse Manor Hall is one of the oldest historic sites in the United States. The manor house was built in the 1600’s by Frederick Philipse I, a Dutchman who amassed a fortune and eventually became lord of a 52,500-acre estate. The house passed to several owners, undergoing additions and changes, and in 1868 was used as the first city hall for the City of Yonkers. Since 1911, Philipse Manor Hall has been open as a museum of art and history and is home to the Cochran Collection of American portraiture. It is located in downtown Yonkers, an area that is undergoing enormous change, including restoration of turn-of-the century store fronts, and the uncovering of the Saw Mill River across the street from the manor hall.
